Despite global tariff tensions, Macau’s casinos remain stable, showing resilience in the face of international trade disputes and economic uncertainty. CreditSights, a financial research firm, reported a sharp jump in Macau gaming bond spreads. Sands China, for instance, saw spreads rise by as much as 137 basis points after the tariff news. But when it comes to real-world play, things are holding up. Citigroup’s research shows that betting activity in April stayed flat compared to last year. Even high-end players, often called “whales,” increased their average wagers by 2%. Despite ongoing tariff tensions, most gamblers in Macau are not changing their habits. The region continues to attract about 73% of its visitors from mainland China, keeping the gaming sector largely insulated from direct U.S. influence. Thailand’s Finance Ministry plans to revise the Entertainment Complex Bill, proposing strict financial entry requirements for locals. The Thailand Ministry of Finance has confirmed plans to revise the Entertainment Complex Bill. Based on recommendations from the Council of State, the proposed changes would require Thai nationals to have at least PHP 77 million (USD 1.4 million or 50 million baht) in their bank accounts before being allowed to enter a casino. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated that the government will present this updated draft to parliament. While the government may not fully agree with the restriction, it will submit the legal advisory body’s version as required. Parliament can then make any necessary changes. Julapun opposed the high financial requirement. He pointed out that many Thais already travel abroad to gamble and argued that the restriction does not reflect reality. He stated that only around 10,000 Thais have PHP 77 million (USD 1.4 million / 50 million baht) in a bank account.  Instead of a wealth requirement, he proposed allowing Thai citizens entry if they have paid income tax for three consecutive years and are willing to pay a PHP 7,700 (USD 140 / 5,000 baht) entry fee. After pushback from investors, Thailand has decided to change the rules about who can enter its proposed casinos.  Thailand’s initial proposal said locals needed to have at least PHP78,750,000 (around 50 million baht, or $1.5 million USD) saved in a bank in order to enter. Now, they must show they have paid taxes for three years. The PHP 7,875 (about 5,000 baht, or USD 15) fee to get in is still required. This change has led to much discussion among experts and the public. Some people think it's a good move, as it allows for regulated gambling. Others are concerned about the possible negative effects on society. Here's a look at the reasons for the rule change, its potential economic impact, and the concerns people have. Why the Rules Were Adjusted The original rule, which required a large amount of savings, was seen as too restrictive. The government claimed that only a small number of people in Thailand had that much money. The government worried that this would push many people to gamble illegally, which is a widespread problem. “The Ministry has checked the data and found there are only 10,000 Thai accounts with at least 50 million baht. Furthermore, this change could stimulate tourism. Many tourists from China and other Southeast Asian countries travel to gamble in nearby countries like Cambodia and Singapore. Wynn Resorts unveils two gaming zones at UAE’s first casino, Wynn Al Marjan Island, featuring a grand casino and an exclusive sky gaming area. The UAE’s first casino, Wynn Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, will have two gaming spaces. One will be a large 224,000-square-foot casino. The other will be a private gaming area with sky views. Wynn Resorts, the operator behind the project, confirmed the details. The resort aims to attract both tourists and high-stakes players.  Gaming Is There But Entertainment is Key "We're building two different gaming spaces," said David Loiseau, Wynn's global gaming operations director. His statement ended with talk about a possible third gaming area. The resort plans to open in early 2027. Wynn will be the only casino in the country for several years, giving it a strong position to monopolize the market.  “We’ll have a sky gaming casino on the 22nd floor and the main casino. We’re putting all the ingredients together to make sure that entertainment will be at the heart of this destination,” Loiseau said.  New Rules for a New Market The UAE created the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) to oversee this new industry.
