- Why Thailand Casinos Can't Rely on Mainland China Customers
Thailand's casino industry should avoid relying on Chinese customers, due to risks from China's anti-gambling policies and regional diplomatic issues, experts warn. The Thailand casino industry is expecting mainland China customers to be high-value clients, however, based on recent regional experience, Thailand must refrain from building a sector revolving around these consumers. This is mainly due to risk factors such as China's ongoing efforts to stop its residents from going overseas to gamble and the current condition of diplomatic relations between nations within the region. The potential for Thailand if it legalizes the casino industry was one of the subjects discussed in a panel discussion at the Thai Entertainment Complex Summit organized by Winna Media . As the lead media partner of this Summit, Asia Casino News (ACN) attended this event which took place in Bangkok from December 2-4, 2024. The panel focused on how the legalized Thai casino industry could affect current Asia-Pacific markets and how it could attract local customers. Vitaly Umansky, a senior research analyst at Seaport Research Partners, claims that Chinese consumers are "critically important" for "virtually every gaming market across Asia." Regarding general Chinese travel to Thailand, the publication China Daily stated on October 10 that, with 160,000 travelers, mainland China visitors were the biggest source market for Thailand's tourism industry during China's October Golden Week, which ran from October 1 to October 7. More than 5.1 million Chinese visitors traveled to Thailand between March 1st, when a reciprocal visa exemption between China and Thailand was put into effect, and September 22nd of this year, the news outlet added. One concern, Mr. Umansky pointed out, was whether any Chinese casino operators entering the Thai market would be newcomers or if they were pulled from other regional casino markets like Macau, Vietnam, or Cambodia. The Thai-locals market would also be "critically important," according to Mr. Umansky. Bloomberg Intelligence's Asia-Pacific gaming and leisure analyst, Angela HanLee, provided additional insight into the Chinese consumer issue. She said, "The Chinese government knows that Chinese people [like to] gamble, but… probably doesn’t want people to gamble outside China." "They [the Chinese authorities] still want to keep this gambling money and gambling tax and related expenses in their own country. And, of course, Macau is an offshore city, but still part of China,” she continued. In reference to the emerging Thai casino market, Ben Lee, managing partner of IGamiX Management and Consulting Ltd, said during the panel discussion: "You don't want to be fully dependent on Chinese business." He blamed the drop in Chinese travel to South Korea at the time on a diplomatic conflict between China and South Korea in 2016 over the latter's use of American-supplied weapons on its own territory. According to Mr. Lee, South Korea's foreigner-only casinos—only one is accessible to locals—"used to target the Japanese and the Taiwanese, but because the Americans stationed missiles in South Korea, China all of a sudden closed the gates and that market evaporated.” “Since then, the Korean casinos have had to struggle to get back to the original Japanese and Taiwan customers," he continued. Mr. Umansky noted that "outside the local market, you can't pin your hopes on any specific jurisdiction" with regard to Thailand's prospective casino business. “I think China is the one that’s most volatile,” he added. The iGaming industry grows and develops non-stop, bringing new and exciting opportunities for gambling businesses. Slotegrator, a leading B2B software supplier and aggregator, shared its outlook on the technologies that will be a true game-changer for the iGaming industry next year. 1. Artificial Intelligence Even though AI has been around for a while, in 2025, it will open up new ways for gambling operators to use it: Personalization: AI will drive hyper-targeted betting offers, bonuses, and game recommendations, ensuring every interaction is tailored to individual player preferences. Fraud detection: Advanced AI tools will analyze player behavior to detect suspicious activity, prevent multi-accounting, and combat bonus abuse. Live betting: Real-time AI-powered data analysis will enhance in-play betting, delivering dynamic odds and insights for sports and esports fans. AI is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity for operators to stay competitive. 2. Blockchain and NFTs Blockchain technology is transforming iGaming by introducing transparency, security, and a new level of player engagement through NFTs: Player rewards: NFTs allow players to own in-game assets, such as exclusive skins, avatars, or items, which they can trade, sell, or use across platforms. Unique gaming experiences: Blockchain-based games can leverage NFTs to provide customizable, player-owned content, boosting engagement and retention. Cross-border transactions: Blockchain’s decentralized nature facilitates instant, anonymous payments, breaking geographical barriers. NFTs not only enhance player satisfaction but also open new revenue streams for operators through in-game purchases and trading. 3. Enhanced payment technologies The demand for fast, secure, and seamless payment systems continues to grow in 2025: Cryptocurrencies: Crypto remains a top choice for its speed, anonymity, and ability to handle global transactions. AI-powered personalization: Payment systems will leverage AI to offer tailored deposit limits, preferred methods, and rewards for using specific payment options. Biometric authentication: Fingerprint, facial, and voice recognition technologies will enhance security for fiat and crypto transactions. Operators prioritizing advanced payment solutions will meet player expectations for convenience and security. 4. New game types and immersive experiences Creating new game experiences is the prior task for operators and game providers worldwide. In 2025, innovation in game design will be even more important, as user demands are transforming. Crash games : Fast-paced and rewarding, crash games like Aviator are capturing younger audiences with their simplicity and excitement. VR and AR Casinos: Virtual reality will create realistic casino environments, while augmented reality will bring games into players’ physical spaces, blending real and digital worlds. Live dealer games: Cutting-edge streaming and multi-camera setups will elevate live dealer games, making them more engaging and lifelike. These developments ensure players have access to fresh and captivating content. 5. Affiliate marketing and big data Being a key driver for iGaming success, affiliate marketing is going to be big in 2025. - Thailand Could Rank as "Third Biggest Land-Based Casino Market"
Thailand is set to become the Third Biggest Land-Based Casino Market, with integrated casino resorts potentially generating up to US$15 billion in annual GGR, according to CLSA Ltd. Thailand could rank as the "third biggest land-based casino market" in terms of 2023 data. This was revealed by Jeffrey Kiang, an analyst at brokerage CLSA Ltd., during the Thai Entertainment Complex Summit organized by Winna Media . As the lead media partner of this Summit, Asia Casino News (ACN) attended this event which took place in Bangkok from December 2-4, 2024. According to Kiang, the Thai casino resort sector has the potential to generate US$15 billion in annual gross gaming revenue (GGR) "once ramped up." The brokerage previously said last July that the Thai market could bring in US$8.5 billion a year. Meanwhile, Ben Lee, managing partner of IGamiX Management and Consulting Ltd, stated during the same event that "GGR from the international markets alone"—that is, non-local players—in the Thai market "could very easily reach US$10 billion." CLSA’s Mr. Kiang also pointed out that 20 to 25 percent of guests in Thai integrated resorts (IRs) with casinos are probably from Hong Kong and mainland China, "similar to Singapore." Under the current draft casino bill of Thailand, casino licenses would have a 30-year term with the option to be renewed for an additional 10-year period. Every casino resort will need to invest at least THB100 billion, which is currently equivalent to US$2.9 billion. "Malaysia... the second contributor because the Malaysian Chinese are used to gambling," Mr. Lee predicted, referring to China as the country that would provide the most foreign players. "I think Macau will be a potential loser simply because, at the moment, [Macau] gets about 93.5 percent of [its] visitors from Greater China–mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong,” the consultant said. Kiang also expects Thailand to be “most like” the resort market in Singapore and thus a direct rival of Singapore. Kiang stated, “We think the GGR per visitation in Singapore–at US$386–should be the most comparable” when it comes to Thailand. Mr. Lee then pointed out: "Malaysia, Singapore's immediate northern neighbor, has "been feeding the two IRs in Singapore very strongly." He continued, "Maybe not in terms of the top level [players], but certainly in terms what we call the 'uncles and aunties,' the growing mass." - Thailand Integrated Resort to Attract Gamblers From Abroad
The diverse nature of Thailand’s Integrated Resorts is expected to draw tourists and gaming enthusiasts from countries such as China, India, and Russia. The diverse nature of Thailand’s proposed Integrated Resorts (IRs) is expected to draw more visitors from heavily-populated countries “that have gaming or have a penchant for gaming,” according to iGaming experts. Largely populated countries such as China, India, and Russia have distinct markets that will make them want to gamble in Thailand, on top of Thailand’s foothold as a tourism giant in Southeast Asia. Experts pointed this out during a December 3, 2024 session of the Thai Entertainment Complex Summit. As the lead media partner of this Summit, Asia Casino News (ACN) attended this event which is ongoing until December 4. “I don't think Thailand will actually attract any more new visitor countries, because it already has a huge swath of countries to draw from. What's interesting is that I think that it will draw more so from those countries that have gaming, or that have a penchant for gaming,” Ben Lee, managing partner of IGamiX Management and Consulting Ltd, shared at a panel discussion held at the Bangkok Marriott Hotel in Thailand. Lilly Choi-Lee, TravConsult co-founder, said the distinct features of Thailand’s prospective integrated resorts will make it stand out from neighboring countries, especially from China, which boasts a large player-base. “For that Chinese person, the icing on the cake will be the ability to go not only to the cultural heritage sites that are genuine and authentic, but go to an integrated resort to have the excitement of gaming,” Cohen-Lee shared. For Jeffrey Kiang, analyst at brokerage CLSA Ltd., Thailand's appeal to tourists is diverse, encompassing nature, sports and leisure activities. Rather than solely focusing on attracting new visitors, he suggests that the country should prioritize encouraging repeat visits from its existing broad customer base by offering the right experiences and services. He believes this will give a distinct flavor to Thailand’s own IRs, should the proposal be approved. “I think the purpose of people coming to Thailand is very diverse. You have people coming for the nature, you have people coming for the Muay Thai camp, and you have people coming for really enjoying the cuisine and having some fun time here as well,” Kiang said. “So I think it probably is more about attracting from repeated visitation, but in terms of the broadly customer base or traveler base, I think Thailand is already very broad already. We just need the right offering to keep these people coming to this part of the border,” he added. Tourists from China and India have the potential to become “long-term” visitors to Thailand’s casinos and its entertainment complexes, citing the drive for Gen Z’s and Millennials to travel. “ They're already traveling. They are going to be the future money, the ones with the money, and for India as well. And then your two large markets as well,” Lee-Cohen said. Aside from China and India, the resource persons expect Thailand’s casinos to draw visitors from Malaysia, South Korea, and Russia. “Malaysia, because they're a monopoly. It's Malaysia that has been feeding the two IRs, Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, in Singapore very strongly. Maybe not in terms of the top level, but certainly in terms of what we call the uncles and aunties. “South Korea is another very strong country for gaming. Their gaming make-ups are very different. They're the middle class, not the top, not the bottom, but the middle professional class: very different demographics,” Lee said. “Now for the Russians, casinos are a great way to launder money, so we can expect them here. They stopped going to Cyprus for various reasons, so they're looking for a new destination,” Lee said. READ: Thailand, UAE Integrated Resorts Could Boost GGR by $3-5B Trevor Lee, co-founder of TravConsult, added that affluent travelers from Asian countries like China, India, Korea, and Japan still seek out extravagant experiences. They desire destinations with a “wow factor,” such as integrated entertainment complexes. For instance, a new complex in Bangkok would allow visitors to boast about having experienced world-class service, gaming, luxury shopping, and fine dining. “The Asian markets of China, India, and even Korea and Japan, those in the affluent, sophisticated level of travel still want a brag factor when they travel, and the integrated entertainment complex, a new one. Let's say, for example, in Bangkok here, they want to say ‘I've been there, I've been there. When it opened in that first year and I experienced this fantastic level of service, I dabbled in the gaming area, but the luxury shopping was divine and the quality of food and beverage, you have to go.’ Brag factor amongst the Indian affluent and the Chinese affluent still exists, it's very strong,” Cohen said. The summit comes at the heels of the Thailand government’s proposals to build casinos nestled in Integrated Resorts, a move which Thailand hopes can increase its revenue further. These complexes are envisioned as multi-faceted destinations that combine luxury hotels, world-class shopping, fine dining, and state-of-the-art entertainment facilities, including casinos. The government believes that these entertainment complexes will not only attract high-spending tourists but also generate significant revenue and create jobs. Experts estimated that these establishments will increase visitation by 5 to 20 percent, and increase tourism spending per capita - or the capacity of a tourist to spend - by “50 percent.” Read related article: 2nd Competing Thailand Casino Bill to be Submitted This Dec
- 2nd Competing Thailand Casino Bill to be Submitted This Dec
Thailand list-MP Chulapong Yukate will submit a second bill to legislate for casino resorts in Thailand. A final decision is expected to be made by April 12, 2025. Thailand’s path to legalizing casinos is gaining momentum as a second bill focused on “Entertainment Complexes” was announced on December 3, 2024. The bill, introduced by Chulapong Yukate, a member of the People’s Party and a prominent Thai list-MP (Member of Parliament), was unveiled at the inaugural Thai Entertainment Complex Summit which is organized by Winna Media . As the lead media partner of this Summit, Asia Casino News (ACN) attended this event which is ongoing in Bangkok until December 4. Yukate, a corporate finance lawyer by profession, aims to submit the bill to the Thai National Assembly for consideration on December 12, 2024. If the bill progresses as planned, a final decision on its passage is expected by April 12, 2025. The bill proposes a new framework for the establishment of casino resorts, which are defined as multi-use "Entertainment Complexes" that could include casinos, hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, bars, and potentially sports facilities. This new approach is distinct from previous attempts at liberalizing Thailand’s casino laws and focuses on a mixed-use model that blends entertainment, leisure, and gaming. Defining the Entertainment Complex Model Yukate pointed out that an ideal Entertainment Complex would be similar to a Thai shopping mall, “with five to 10 percent of its area [about 2,000 acres] of its area for a casino.” He likened it to a modern retail space, but one that integrates gaming and other entertainment options. For example, a typical complex might span over 2,000 acres, incorporating a variety of attractions in addition to the casino. The key, Yukate explained, is the business structure. The bill proposes that the ownership of these complexes can be in the hands of anyone, even those without experience in managing casinos. If the owner lacks the necessary expertise, they would be allowed to subcontract casino management to specialized casino operators, ensuring that the gaming experience is professional and well-regulated. Yukate’s bill also offers flexibility to foreign investors, particularly regarding the ownership structure. Traditionally, Thai law limits foreign ownership of businesses in the country to a 49 percent stake, while local ownership must be at least 51 percent. However, Yukate’s bill aligns with the model used in Thailand's telecommunications sector, where foreign investors can hold greater shares without the same restrictions. In the case of the Entertainment Complexes, the bill would allow for more substantial foreign investment, bypassing the traditional percentage limits on foreign ownership. READ: Thailand, UAE Integrated Resorts Could Boost GGR by $3-5B The Government’s Role in Oversight The bill outlines a clear governance framework for managing the casino resorts. A 15-member Entertainment Complex Policy Committee would be established, with Thailand’s Prime Minister serving as its chair. This committee would play a central role in formulating policies and overseeing the development of Entertainment Complexes in the country. In addition to the policy committee, a separate Entertainment Complex Management Committee would be formed to handle day-to-day operational decisions. This committee would also have 15 members, with a chairperson appointed by the Prime Minister. The legal framework also includes provisions for penalties and fines. While Thailand’s existing laws for illegal gambling would remain in place, the bill introduces a fine of 500,000 Baht (US$ 14,556) for any violation of the casino regulations. The bill does not propose imprisonment for such violations, though serious infractions related to illegal gambling would still be punishable under current laws. Moreover, Yukate has emphasized the importance of establishing a fund to help individuals struggling with gambling addictions, a significant step toward addressing the social impacts of legalizing casinos. International Investment and Expertise A key feature of Yukate’s proposal is the emphasis on international investment and expertise. He made it clear that for Thailand’s new casino resorts to succeed, they will need significant foreign involvement. “We really need international investment,” Yukate said during his address. “The law does not require a local director for the Entertainment Complexes. Any nationality can be a director, which is a huge advantage for attracting international expertise.” This open approach to foreign leadership is seen as crucial for building world-class entertainment complexes that can compete on the global stage. With Thailand’s long-standing ban on casinos, the country has not had the opportunity to develop the expertise needed to run large-scale gambling operations. By allowing foreign investors to take a more prominent role in the ownership and management of these resorts, the bill seeks to ensure that Thailand can leverage the experience of established casino operators to build a thriving, sustainable industry. READ: JP Morgan: Thai Legal Casino Sector Could Boost GDP by 1% Next Steps and Timeline Yukate’s bill is expected to undergo a thorough review in the Thai National Assembly. The first reading of the bill is scheduled for December 12, 2024, with subsequent readings and responses scheduled over the following months. A final decision on the bill is expected by April 12, 2025. If approved, the bill will then face a 180-day waiting period before it is published in the government gazette, officially becoming law. Once the legislation is enacted, the Thai government will begin issuing licenses for the new Entertainment Complexes. While the bill does not specify the number of complexes to be built, there have been reports that the government is considering allowing up to five resort licenses, with potential locations in major tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and the Eastern Economic Corridor. Rumors have also suggested that Pattaya, a popular beach resort city, could be one of the key locations for the new casino resorts. READ: Nearly 5 Million Thai Children Are Gamblers: Study A New Era for Thailand’s Tourism and Economy The introduction of legal casinos could significantly impact Thailand’s tourism and economy. The government is hopeful that the development of Entertainment Complexes will attract international tourists, increase job opportunities, and generate substantial tax revenue. Thailand has long been a popular tourist destination, known for its vibrant culture, beaches, and hospitality. By adding legalized casinos into the mix, the country aims to expand its appeal to high-end international visitors and create a more diversified tourism experience. However, the bill is not without its critics. Some fear that the legalization of casinos could lead to increased gambling addiction and other social problems. Yukate addressed these concerns by proposing a dedicated fund to help those affected by gambling issues, signaling the government's commitment to minimizing the negative social impacts. In the coming months, Thailand’s government will closely monitor the progress of the bill. If passed, it could usher in a new era for the country, one that balances tourism and entertainment with responsible regulation and oversight. With foreign investment and expertise playing a central role, Thailand is set to become one of the next major destinations for legalized casino resorts in Asia. - Richard Marcus Reveals How He Swindled P2.23 Billion From Casinos
No one knew that Richard Marcus swindled casinos out of vast sums for two decades—until he revealed his secrets in his 2005 book, “The Great Casino Heist.” For more than two decades, Richard Marcus was one of the most notorious figures in the world of high-stakes gambling. The self-proclaimed "best casino cheat ever," Marcus managed to swindle a staggering £30 million (P2.23 billion) from casinos worldwide using a mix of deception, precision, and psychological manipulation. His infamous exploits earned him a reputation as a "shark" on the gambling scene, and his legendary cheating strategies continue to intrigue those with an interest in the dark arts of casino hustling. Marcus claims that for two decades, no one had any idea how he was consistently swindling casinos out of vast sums—until he revealed his secrets in his 2005 book, “The Great Casino Heist.” From Dealer School to Global Casino Cheat Richard Marcus' journey into the world of casino cheating began in an unlikely way. Initially, he blagged his way into a casino dealer school, hoping to secure a position at a casino. Little did he know, this step would lead him to a life of deception and high-stakes gambling. Marcus soon found himself working at a Las Vegas casino, where he met a notorious casino cheat named Joe Classon. Classon introduced Marcus to the world of professional cheating, and the two, along with two others, formed a close-knit team. "We were like a rock ‘n’ roll band," Marcus recalls. They traveled to casinos around the world, carrying out well-orchestrated scams that often went unnoticed by the casino staff. Over the years, Marcus honed his skills and eventually took over as the team leader when Classon retired. According to Marcus, the rush of outsmarting the casino was just as thrilling as the money itself. "At first, it was all about the money. But then, it was the adrenaline rush, the ego... the fact that I could pull it off," he said in an article published by LAD Bible. The Savannah Move: A Cheat’s Greatest Trick Marcus' most famous scam, known as "The Savannah," is a brilliant example of the art of cheating. The move, which he claims is the "best cheating strategy ever," was a deceptively simple but highly effective way to deceive roulette dealers and walk away with thousands of dollars. The technique involved placing two chips on a roulette table: one high-value chip, such as $5,000, and a low-value chip, such as $5, overlapping each other just enough to appear as though Marcus was betting only $5. "The key was that the dealers couldn’t see the larger chip unless they leaned forward and looked very closely," Marcus explains. "But I knew they would never do that. In over 20,000 encounters with dealers, I never saw one step out of their dealing position to check." This allowed him to disguise his large bet as a modest one. If the ball landed on his number, Marcus would make a scene, celebrating his win as if he’d just hit the jackpot. This would prompt the dealer to review surveillance footage, which would show the bet was legitimate. However, if his bet didn’t win, Marcus had a clever backup plan. He would use a distraction, often caused by an accomplice, to swap the $5,000 chip for a $5 chip. His quick hands and distraction tactics made it nearly impossible for the dealer to catch him in the act. "I couldn’t let them take the $5,000 chip," Marcus says. "If I did, I was just gambling like everyone else, and we all know how that ends." When faced with suspicion, Marcus would often resort to a well-practiced "drunk routine." "If security arrived, I would act like a slobbering drunk and insist it was a mistake," he says. The act worked every time, allowing Marcus to get away scot-free. "Once I put the chip back, there was no reason for anyone to call surveillance." A Master of Psychological Manipulation While "The Savannah" move was a technical feat, much of Marcus' success came from his ability to manipulate the behavior of casino personnel. By convincing dealers and floor staff that he was a legitimate high roller, Marcus was able to gain their trust, which made it easier for him to execute his schemes. "All the other moves I created were based on psychological manipulation," he explains. "I convinced them I was a legitimate player, and they would just let me do my thing." Marcus admits that his tactics weren’t just about cheating the system. He was able to spot vulnerabilities in how casinos trained their staff, exploiting their lack of attention or experience. "I was the only high-level cheat who never got caught," he says proudly. "Everybody knew I was cheating, but nobody could figure out how." Teaching Casinos How to Protect Themselves After 25 years of successfully swindling casinos around the world, Marcus eventually retired from the game. However, his time as a cheat wasn’t entirely in vain. Today, he uses his extensive knowledge to help casinos protect themselves from scams. As a game protection trainer and consultant, Marcus travels the world, teaching casinos and gambling professionals how to spot and prevent cheating tactics like the ones he once used. Marcus is now on the other side of the casino floor, working with casino staff to train them in the art of spotting scams. "I teach casinos how to protect themselves," he says. "I show them how to identify people like me and how to avoid getting taken for a ride." His transition from casino cheat to game protection consultant is a testament to his vast knowledge of the industry. "I’ve spent a lifetime understanding how casinos operate," he reflects. "Now, I’m using that knowledge for good." Read related article: Top 5 Most Popular Casino Games Searched in the U.S.
- Study: Nearly 5 Million Thailand Children Are Gambling
Thailand faces a gambling crisis, with nearly 5 million children involved in gambling. Experts discuss solutions at a forum hosted by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation. With nearly 5 million children and young people involved in various forms of gambling, Thailand is facing a growing gambling crisis that poses serious risks to its youth and broader society, according to health experts and academics at a recent forum. The country is confronting the urgent need for action to curb the damaging effects of this rising trend. The forum, titled “Gambling Risk Society: Betting on the Future,” was hosted by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation in collaboration with the Centre for Gambling Studies at Chulalongkorn University. The event, held at the Mandarin Samyan Hotel in Bangkok, aimed to raise awareness and develop strategies to combat gambling-related issues, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations, including children and young adults. Recent studies presented at the forum, which was reported by the Thai publication The Nation, revealed alarming statistics regarding gambling in Thailand. Research indicates that over 6 million people in Thailand are at risk of developing gambling-related problems. Experts have cautioned that the establishment of "entertainment complexes," especially casinos, could become hubs for illegal activities such as money laundering. They urge caution in approving such establishments, highlighting the potential risks they pose to both individuals and the broader financial system. According to a study led by Assoc. Prof. Nualnoi Treerat from the Centre for Gambling Studies, over 7,000 individuals aged 15 and above were surveyed across 24 provinces between November 15 and 27, 2023. The results highlighted the extent of gambling involvement, with 99.3% of respondents aware of someone participating in gambling activities. Among them, 21% were children (aged 15-18) and 26% were youth (aged 19-25). The data shows that around 1.06 million children between the ages of 15 and 18 are currently involved in gambling, while approximately 3.92 million youth in the 19-25 age range are similarly engaged. Both figures have increased since 2021, raising concerns about the long-term impact of gambling on young people. In addition to these figures, the research revealed that nearly 45 million people in Thailand are experiencing the negative consequences of gambling, ranging from financial difficulties and deteriorating mental health to strained family relationships and social isolation. Online Gambling and Technology’s Role One of the key points discussed at the forum was the growing influence of online gambling platforms. Pongthep Wongwatcharapaiboon, the director of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, emphasized the role of technology in facilitating gambling behavior. He explained that online gambling platforms, which operate around the clock and often offer promotions, make it easier for individuals to gamble without limitations. Wongwatcharapaiboon warned that continuous gambling can lead to addiction, a psychiatric disorder similar to substance abuse. “If you gamble continuously, you lose the ability to control yourself, which is a danger sign,” he said. “This can lead to gambling addiction, affecting individuals, families, and communities.” The rise of online gambling has exacerbated the problem, making it more accessible and difficult to regulate. Many young people are drawn to these platforms, which often promise quick rewards and excitement. However, the consequences of developing a gambling addiction can be devastating, not only for the individuals involved but for their families and society as a whole. Concerns Over the Legalization of Gambling Another major topic discussed at the forum was the proposal to expand legal gambling in Thailand, particularly through the creation of casinos and the legalization of football betting. This proposal has generated significant public concern, with more than half of Thai respondents expressing opposition to the idea. Many worry that legalizing gambling would lead to an increase in gambling-related problems, particularly among vulnerable groups such as youth. Asst. Dr. Natchapol Jittirat, a faculty member at Chulalongkorn University, raised important issues regarding the Comprehensive Entertainment Venue Act, which aims to regulate the operation of casinos in Thailand. While proponents argue that legalizing gambling could boost the economy, Jittirat highlighted the risks involved. He pointed out that casinos are often used as venues for money laundering, which could undermine Thailand’s efforts to combat financial crime. “Casinos are often used as money laundering facilities,” Jittirat noted, stressing the need for strict regulation to prevent criminal activities. He warned that lax oversight could put Thailand’s international standing at risk. Specifically, the country could face consequences from international bodies like the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which monitors money laundering and terrorist financing activities. If Thailand were placed on the FATF’s Grey List, it could face economic sanctions and reduced access to international trade and investment. Mental Health Support and Prevention Strategies The forum also highlighted the insufficient availability of mental health resources for individuals struggling with gambling addiction. Over 6 million people in Thailand are considered to be at high risk of developing problematic gambling behaviors. However, mental health support services for these individuals are still lacking. Many gamblers do not seek help until their issues have already severely impacted their lives. Experts at the conference called for greater investment in mental health resources and better prevention strategies to address the root causes of gambling addiction. This includes educating the public, particularly young people, about the dangers of gambling and offering support for those who need it. A Call for Comprehensive Policy Changes As the gambling crisis continues to grow, stakeholders are advocating for comprehensive policy changes to address the issue. These include stricter regulations on gambling platforms, especially online sites, and more robust measures to protect vulnerable populations from the negative impacts of gambling. The Thai Health Promotion Foundation and the Centre for Gambling Studies emphasized the need for collaboration between the government, public health organizations, and the community to create effective strategies. The ultimate goal is to protect young people from falling into the trap of gambling addiction while ensuring that the broader social and economic impact of gambling is minimized. - Macau Satellite Casinos Face Uncertainty Amid Pending Talks
Macau’s satellite casino operators may shift to management companies, which are no longer allowed to share gaming revenue under current regulations. With discussions between the Macau government and gaming concessionaires having yet to take place, the future of satellite casinos in Macau point towards an unclear future. The three-year transitional grace period under the new gaming law is coming to an end in thirteen months. Given the current circumstances, the operators of Macau's satellite casinos might have to switch to management-only businesses, which will no longer be permitted to share gaming revenue. Jay Chun, co-chairman and managing director of Paradise Entertainment, said he hoped that negotiations would start “soon,” according to a report from the Macau News Agency. Paradise Entertainment runs Casino Kam Pek on the Macau peninsula under the gaming license of SJM Holdings. However, Chun pointed out that because of the change in administration, talks will probably only start once Ho Iat Seng is replaced as Chief Executive on December 20 by Sam Hou Fai. In a written inquiry to the Macau government last month, lawmaker José Pereira Coutinho expressed concerns about the future of satellite casinos and the possibility of closures, which might have an impact on the employment of around 10,000 local employees. Nine of the 30 casinos in Macau, including 11 satellite casinos, are currently run under SJM's license. The new gaming regulations and the negative consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak caused seven satellite casinos to collapse in 2022. It is Chun's hope that satellite casinos would stay open after the grace period. "We have many employees, and no one wishes for these workers to abruptly lose their jobs," he said as he underlined the significance of job protection. Additionally, he noted that the computation of management fees is currently the main focus. Chun stated that the specifics of upcoming talks are still unknown because every satellite location has different circumstances. Sam Hou Fai, the current Chief Executive, met with the Macao Gaming Practitioners Volunteers Association and the Macao Gaming Industry Employees Home in September of this year. The potential impact on local employment caused by the prospective closures of satellite casinos was a source of concern for industry representatives. The representatives demanded that gaming workers' employment rights be upheld and emphasized the importance of paid training for the long-term viability of the sector. They advised that workers be given enough assistance to adjust to the new environment. Read related article: Macau Forecasts $29.7 Billion in Gaming Revenue for 2025

The iGaming industry is undergoing transformative changes that are reshaping the way operators and providers do business. This comprehensive analysis delves into the trends and innovations that will define the industry in the coming years. The report highlights how artificial intelligence (AI), payment technologies, social gaming, and evolving player expectations are poised to revolutionize the iGaming world. One of the most significant changes noted in the report is the growing role of AI in iGaming. AI is no longer just a tool for streamlining operations; it is now an essential part of enhancing the player experience. Advances in AI are enabling unprecedented levels of personalization, fraud detection, and player engagement. According to Faruk Aydin, Chief Revenue Officer at Revpanda Group, AI is set to be a game-changing force in iGaming. He emphasized the importance of creating content that is local, relevant, and human-written to truly connect with players. “As we navigate the AI era, I believe it’s more important than ever for iGaming brands to ensure their content is local, relevant, and human-written to truly connect with players and build trust,” Aydin said. The report predicts that AI will further expand its influence in the iGaming sector by enhancing areas such as data analysis, content creation, process automation, and personalization tools. William Sarto, PR & Marketing Specialist at CasinoRIX, echoed this sentiment, stating that AI will play a key role in shaping the iGaming experience in 2025. He noted, “AI continues to transform the iGaming industry. In 2025, its application will expand in areas such as data analysis and processing to enhance the gaming experience, content creation and process automation, and tools for personalization and creating added value for players.” Another key trend outlined in the report is the rapid evolution of payment technologies. As players demand faster, more secure, and more convenient transaction methods, iGaming companies are adapting to meet these needs. In 2025, the integration of cryptocurrencies, biometric authentication, and instant cross-border transactions will be crucial to providing a seamless payment experience. Operators will need to keep pace with these innovations to maintain player satisfaction and stay competitive in the global market. In addition to technological advancements, the report highlights the growing importance of social gaming and community building. As iGaming platforms evolve, they are becoming more than just places for entertainment. They are transforming into social spaces where players can connect with one another, share experiences, and build a sense of belonging. Features like live dealer games, player chats, and tournaments are enhancing player retention by fostering a sense of community. Sarto pointed out that social and charitable initiatives, as well as a focus on responsible gambling, are becoming increasingly important in the iGaming industry. Companies that prioritize these areas are not only improving their public image but also cultivating a positive internal culture. He also emphasized the importance of values in brand development, noting that players are looking for more than just quality products—they want an emotional connection with the brands they engage with. “Building a strong brand is becoming a core development vector. Establishing values, communicating them to both B2B and B2C audiences, and creating added value for consumers are critical,” Sarto explained. The report also explores the rise of new and innovative game formats. Traditional gaming experiences are being supplemented by exciting options such as crash games, skill-based gaming, and immersive virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences. These new formats are appealing to a broader, more diverse audience and are expected to grow in popularity by 2025. Operators who are quick to adopt these trends will be able to tap into new player demographics and enhance their offerings. Affiliate marketing strategies are also evolving, with a strong emphasis on authenticity, transparency, and localization. The growing importance of localized content allows operators to better connect with specific target demographics, especially as global markets become more diverse. By focusing on genuine partnerships and community-oriented approaches, operators can foster deeper connections with players and boost engagement. Slotegrator’s report also stresses the importance of forward-thinking strategies. As player preferences continue to shift, operators will need to stay agile and adapt to the latest technological advancements. By doing so, they can maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly changing iGaming market. Faruk Aydin summarized the need for strategic foresight by stating, ““I think 2025 will be another year where we’ll see new trends emerge, while still needing to stick to the fundamentals. If iGaming brands want to stay ahead in the marketing game, they’ll need to focus on a smarter, more strategic approach.” Aydin also highlighted the increasing significance of multi-channel marketing. In 2025, iGaming brands will need to engage players through a combination of social media, email, influencers, and more. By creating seamless, personalized experiences across various platforms, operators will strengthen their relationships with players and build long-term loyalty. Additionally, SEO will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring brands remain visible and competitive in the crowded online space. Finally, the report points to emerging markets as a key growth opportunity for iGaming brands. With online gaming adoption on the rise in certain regions, companies that can successfully localize their approach to meet regional preferences will be well-positioned to expand their reach and capture new audiences. Aydin emphasized, “Exploring new and emerging markets, especially in regions with growing online gaming adoption, presents a huge opportunity for brands that localize their approach and adapt to regional preferences.” According to this Slotegrator report, the iGaming industry in 2025 will be defined by rapid technological innovation, evolving player expectations, and a shift toward social and community-driven experiences. Operators who can leverage the power of AI, stay ahead of payment technology trends, and build strong, values-driven brands will thrive in this dynamic landscape. - Rep. Robert Ace Barbers Condemns POGO-Funded Slander
"The money from this drug trade is used to acquire landholdings, influence and corrupt government officials who conspire with drug traders," says Rep. Robert Ace Barbers. Rep. Robert Ace Barbers of Surigao del Norte condemned the "well-funded and orchestrated troll campaign" that was purportedly funded by Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and illegal drug syndicates in an attempt to sabotage the House of Representatives Quad Committee's continuing investigation. Barbers stated on November 27, 2024 that the campaign's goal was to scare witnesses who have revealed important links between POGOs, corruption, and illegal drugs, as well as to undermine the mega-panel. During the 12th hearing of the committee, Barbers opened the session by saying, "Trolls paid for with POGO and drug money continue [with their smear campaign] against committee members and witnesses." Barbers bemoaned efforts to damage the Quad Comm's credibility, saying it was dedicated to finding the truth. Barbers is also the chair of the Committee on Dangerous Drugs. He cited evidence that the Quad Comm has found that connects POGO activities to the criminal drug trade, exposing the way that drug money is transferred through these gambling companies. Barbers was quoted as saying in a Manila Standard report, "The money flow from this drug trade is being used to acquire landholdings, influence and corrupt government officials and employees who conspire with drug traders in offering protection and fake identities, that undermine security of our country."
