Stake Alberta secures licence, eyes October 12 launch

Stake Alberta is preparing to enter Canada's regulated online gaming market after Stake Canada Ltd. secured approval from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), with the operator targeting an October 12 launch.
The planned launch remains subject to Stake Canada executing an operating agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), according to the company. Once operational, the Alberta offering is expected to include online casino and sportsbook products.
The approval marks Stake's first entry into Canada's regulated online gaming market and expands the company's portfolio of locally regulated operations beyond Europe and Latin America.
Stake Alberta prepares for regulated launch
Stake Canada said its Alberta operation is expected to become fully operational on October 12, provided the required operating agreement with AiGC is completed.
The company described Alberta as an important opportunity because of the province's established sports and gaming audience. Kris Abbott, country manager at Stake Canada, said the company's planned entry represents a milestone in its Canadian expansion.
Stake Canada board member Birgitte Sand said the company's regulated-market strategy is focused on preparation, accountability and long-term compliance. She also highlighted the importance of meeting local standards and player-safety requirements.
The approval follows Stake Canada's registration as an iGaming operator in Alberta on September 24. Canadian Gaming Business reported that the company subsequently received its full licence on October 6.
Alberta iGaming market enters a new phase
Stake's arrival comes less than three months after Alberta opened its private-sector regulated iGaming market on July 13, 2026.
The province's framework was designed to bring online casino and sports betting activity into a regulated environment, with player-protection measures including self-exclusion, financial and time-based limits, activity statements and requirements for operators to respond to indicators of potential gambling harm.
The Alberta market also established a transition period for certain previously unregulated operators. That process is scheduled to reach its October 13 deadline, making Stake's targeted October 12 launch particularly timely.
Stake Canada previously obtained an extension to complete its transition work, according to comments from Abbott reported by Canadian Gaming Business.
For Stake Alberta, the final operating agreement remains an important condition before the planned launch can proceed.
Stake expands its regulated-market strategy
The Alberta approval forms part of a broader shift by Stake toward locally regulated markets.
Gaming Intelligence reported that the operator already has regulated operations in Italy and Denmark in Europe, as well as Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Argentina in Latin America.
Stake Canada is a separate Canadian entity established to pursue regulated market opportunities. The company is also seeking entry into Ontario, where its licence application remains pending with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).
That distinction is important because Stake's regulated Alberta operation will operate separately from the offshore Stake.com platform that has historically served Canadian customers outside provincial regulated markets.
The Alberta entry therefore represents more than a geographic expansion. It moves the Stake brand into a provincial regulatory framework with specific licensing, operating and responsible-gaming requirements.
What Stake's Alberta entry means for the market
Stake's planned launch adds another internationally recognized operator to Alberta's emerging competitive iGaming market.
Gaming Intelligence reported that more than 30 licensed iGaming sites were already operating in Alberta ahead of Stake's expected debut. The province's framework is consequently moving from its initial launch phase toward a broader competitive environment as additional operators complete regulatory requirements.
For the wider gaming industry, Stake's Alberta entry provides another example of major online gambling brands pursuing regulated-market access as jurisdictions establish formal licensing systems.
The immediate next step for Stake Canada is completion of its AiGC operating agreement. If that requirement is satisfied, Stake expects to begin offering its sportsbook and casino products to Alberta customers on October 12.
