Grand Korea Leisure's August casino sales fell both year-on-year and month-on-month, although stronger customer drop kept its 2026 year-to-date performance above last year's level.

Grand Korea Leisure Co Ltd (GKL), the South Korean operator of the Seven Luck foreigner-only casino brand, recorded a sharp decline in casino sales in August, with revenue falling 25.4% from July and 11.3% from the same month last year.

The company generated approximately KRW31.11 billion (about US$22.9 million) in August casino sales, according to figures filed with the Korea Exchange. The result marked a significant reversal from July, when GKL's casino sales had increased 12.0% month-on-month. (Source: GGR Asia)

Despite the weaker monthly result, GKL's cumulative casino sales for the first eight months of 2026 remained 5.6% higher year-on-year at nearly KRW299.97 billion.

GKL casino sales fall across both major gaming segments

The August decline was broad-based, with both table-game and machine-game sales falling from the previous month and from August 2025.

Table-game sales reached approximately KRW27.81 billion, down 10.8% year-on-year and 26.9% from July.

Machine-game sales totaled approximately KRW3.30 billion, representing a 15.4% year-on-year decline and a 9.8% month-on-month decrease.

The figures indicate that the weaker August result was not confined to one part of GKL's casino business. Both segments contributed to the monthly contraction.

Seoul casinos record significant August declines

GKL's two Seoul properties also recorded weaker results in August. The Seoul Dragon City casino in Yongsan generated approximately KRW12.85 billion in sales. That was around 10.0% lower than a year earlier and 2.0% below July's result.   The decline was considerably sharper at GKL's Gangnam property.

August sales reached approximately KRW12.41 billion, down 13.3% year-on-year and 43.1% from July.   GKL also operates a third Seven Luck casino in Busan, with all three properties contributing to the group's overall August result. The company is a subsidiary of the Korea Tourism Organization, which is affiliated with South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Higher casino drop offers a different picture

One of the more notable aspects of GKL's August figures is that casino drop increased even as casino sales declined. GKL recorded approximately KRW341.40 billion in casino drop during August, up 7.2% year-on-year and 5.0% from July. Casino drop refers to the amount customers pay to purchase gaming chips. The contrasting movements mean that customers put more money into chip purchases during August, but GKL ultimately recorded lower casino sales.

The difference is important when interpreting monthly casino performance because drop and casino sales measure different parts of the gaming activity. A higher drop does not automatically translate into higher casino revenue.

GKL's year-to-date casino performance remains positive

Although August was a difficult month, the company's performance for the first eight months of the year remained ahead of 2025.

GKL's aggregate casino sales reached almost KRW299.97 billion from January through August, representing a 5.6% increase from the same period last year.

Its cumulative casino drop was even stronger. The amount reached approximately KRW2.65 trillion, up 10.5% year-on-year.  This creates a more mixed picture for the operator: August brought a substantial monthly decline, but the year-to-date figures still show growth compared with 2025.

August decline follows stronger July performance

The scale of August's month-on-month decline becomes clearer when compared with GKL's July results. In July, GKL recorded casino sales of approximately KRW41.68 billion, representing a 6.9% year-on-year increase and a 12.0% increase from June. Table-game revenue rose 7.6% year-on-year during the month.

August therefore represented a significant change in momentum. The company's sales fell by more than one-quarter from July, while the Gangnam property experienced the steepest monthly contraction among the Seoul venues. The latest figures do not, by themselves, establish the reason for the August decline. GKL's reported data provide the sales and drop figures but do not offer a specific explanation for the monthly fall. (Source: iGaming Today)

What the August figures mean for GKL

The results highlight the difference between monthly volatility and the company's broader 2026 performance. GKL's August casino sales were weaker across its table and machine segments, while its Seoul venues also posted declines. Yet the operator entered September with cumulative casino sales still above the previous year's level.

The stronger year-to-date drop figure also suggests that customer chip purchases remained relatively robust even as August casino sales declined.

For investors and the wider South Korean casino industry, the coming months will therefore provide a clearer indication of whether August represented a temporary monthly setback or the beginning of a more sustained slowdown in GKL's casino performance.

GKL's next results will show whether August was temporary

GKL's August figures present a mixed picture for South Korea's foreigner-only casino segment. The sharp monthly decline contrasts with the company's positive year-to-date growth, while higher casino drop provides another indicator that customer activity did not fall in the same direction as reported sales.

The September and subsequent monthly figures will be important in determining whether GKL can maintain its year-to-date gains through the remainder of 2026.
