DraftKings expands Canada presence with NHL Prime deal

DraftKings is expanding its visibility in Canada after securing an exclusive sponsorship agreement with Prime Video covering sportsbook and online-casino integrations across NHL on Prime’s Wednesday Night Hockey broadcasts during the 2026-27 season.
The agreement, announced on September 28, makes DraftKings the exclusive sportsbook and online casino integration sponsor for the Canadian NHL broadcasts, while also extending to select Stanley Cup Playoff coverage on Prime Video.
The deal gives DraftKings branding opportunities across pregame programming, live game coverage and intermission segments. It also includes sponsorship elements connected to key game events and score-clock integrations, providing the operator with visibility throughout broadcasts rather than relying solely on conventional commercial placements.
DraftKings NHL Prime Deal Expands Canadian Market Presence
The partnership arrives as Prime Video begins a new phase of its Canadian NHL coverage.
Wednesday Night Hockey will launch on September 30, with Prime Video carrying national regular-season games involving Canadian teams. The 2026-27 package also includes two first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series and one second-round series. Amazon has said the broadcasts will be available in both English and French.
For DraftKings, the arrangement creates a direct association between its sportsbook and online casino brands and one of Canada's largest sports audiences.
DraftKings Chief Marketing Officer Stephanie Sherman said Canada remains important to the company's growth strategy and described the Prime Video agreement as a new way to connect with hockey fans during the season.
Prime Video's advertising materials indicate that its NHL coverage is designed around integrated sponsorship formats, including intermission sponsorships, score-clock takeovers and other broadcast-visible placements.
Alberta adds a new growth market
The sponsorship also comes at an important point in DraftKings' Canadian expansion.
DraftKings has operated its online sportsbook and casino in Ontario since 2022. The company subsequently entered Alberta when the province's regulated iGaming market launched on July 13, 2026, according to Canadian Gaming Business.
Alberta's government says the province's regulated iGaming framework is intended to move online gambling activity toward legal, regulated operators and includes requirements covering player protection, advertising, marketing and social responsibility. Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis serves as the market regulator, while the Alberta iGaming Corporation oversees the market.
DraftKings launched its flagship sportsbook and casino app and its separate Golden Nugget Online Casino platform in Alberta on the first day of the regulated market, according to Canadian Gaming Business.
That gives the Prime Video partnership significance beyond brand exposure. Ontario and Alberta together provide DraftKings with two regulated provincial markets in which its sportsbook and casino products are available, while the NHL broadcasts provide a national media platform.
Exclusive integrations extend beyond sports betting
The agreement is notable because DraftKings is not positioned solely as a sportsbook advertiser.
Prime Video's deal specifically identifies DraftKings as the exclusive Sportsbook and Online Casino Integration sponsor. The arrangement therefore provides exposure for both sides of DraftKings' gaming offering during NHL programming.
The company already maintains relationships with major sports properties that have Canadian audiences, including the NHL, NBA and WNBA, according to Canadian Gaming Business. The Prime Video agreement adds a broadcast-level sponsorship layer around NHL content delivered directly to Canadian viewers.
The move also follows comments from DraftKings co-founder and President of Operations Paul Liberman, who said in July that the company was exploring additional sports partnerships in Alberta because of the province's strong sports fan bases.
Prime Video expands Canadian sports offering
DraftKings' agreement comes as Amazon continues to increase its sports footprint in Canada.
Amazon and Rogers Communications agreed to a 12-year sublicensing arrangement that makes Prime Video the long-term Canadian home of Wednesday Night Hockey. Prime Video's 2026-27 coverage includes at least 26 national regular-season games in English and French, alongside selected Stanley Cup Playoff series.
Amazon has also highlighted the opportunity for advertisers to use integrated formats around live NHL broadcasts. Its advertising platform says Prime Video's Canadian NHL audience includes a significant proportion of cord-cutters and reports that viewers spend more time watching the games than audiences for the cited linear-TV comparison.
For DraftKings, the sponsorship places its brand inside that changing sports-viewing environment at the start of a new NHL season and shortly after Alberta's regulated online gaming market opened.
The first Wednesday Night Hockey broadcast of the 2026-27 season is scheduled for September 30, with the Toronto Maple Leafs facing the New York Islanders at Scotiabank Arena.
What the DraftKings-Prime Video deal means for the Canadian iGaming market
The agreement illustrates how sportsbook operators are increasingly combining gaming products with sports-media distribution in regulated markets.
Rather than limiting exposure to traditional advertising slots, DraftKings will have branded elements incorporated into pregame, live-game and intermission coverage. The arrangement gives the operator a sustained presence around NHL programming while its Canadian footprint includes both Ontario and Alberta.
The commercial impact of the sponsorship will ultimately depend on audience engagement, customer acquisition and retention, and the operator's ability to convert increased visibility into sustainable activity within Canada's regulated provincial markets.
For now, the agreement represents another step in DraftKings' Canadian market expansion and adds a major sports-streaming partnership to its strategy as the 2026-27 NHL season begins.
